Watercolor Class! (Wanna See A Painting?)

YES! I finally got to go to Watercolor Class again. πŸ™‚ I’ve only been able to go to 3 out of 7, but I have loved it every single time I have gone. I have been learning so much, and everybody is so nice and helpful. I’ve had to borrow things from other people in the class more than once, and everybody is so willing to share. Today I shared my pencils with the girl sitting beside me, and I was excited that I finally had something that somebody else needed to use. πŸ˜› It’s such a great feeling to be needed!

I am really excited about everything that is happening, and I am working on some concept sketches for my Children’s Book right now. Mostly I am trying to flesh out the main character and her mother, so I have a strong sense of who they are as characters. Then I’ll be able to focus on the “environment” of it all… then once I get the pictures all done up I will probably go through and edit the words again. It feels so great to be working with watercolors! It’s such an exciting and experimental thing, so fluid and almost like magic. It’s very different than working on a computer, or with pencil– my two favorite mediums.

Something I learned tonight was that my felt tip pen that I love so much does not love watercolors. Well, it is kind of neat in some places, but definitely not for the face of the girl. In these images I am using characters created by David Somar and Jacky Davis, from the Children’s Book Ladybug Girl. It is a really cute series, and I believe there are three books in the series so far. Ladybug Girl and Bingo caught my attention from the first time I saw them, sitting on top of the library shelves.

After about an hour or two of sketching, lining, and painting in the class that is what I ended up with. the sketching always takes me the longest and everything else just kinda falls into place. Unfortunately for Ladybug Girl’s face the felt tip pen was a bleeder (uggh). And her left hand (actually on the right side of the page) is a complete MESS from the darn water making the ink bleed. I really need a pen that isn’t water soluble. πŸ˜› I do really like how Bingo turned out though, especially in the top image. I am very proud of myself on that one!

So hopefully I will be able to get MY OWN characters developed soon, and I can get the ball rolling faster on my Children’s Book.

I love your style, and your work is beautiful! I can’t wait to see your own characters come to life on the page.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can’t wait either, but unfortunately it is going to take some time. These things have a way of building upon themselves, changing themselves, and growing into lives of their own. πŸ™‚ I will be so excited to share with you all once it is finished though! Hopefully sometime before 2013 comes around I will have something really solid to share.

Heather loves hats that are designed to look like cute animals, fairy wings, cheese pizza, swimming in ponds, roller blading, taking silly self-portraits, learning, spending time with people, and just about everything else too. Heather does not love ... well, there isn't a lot that she doesn't love. You can probably figure it out after a little while!
