Breathe, Just Breathe

What does it mean to breathe? What is the “breath of life”? What keeps you going? Where does breath come from? Why do we hold our breath when things scare us, or excite us? Why do we forget to breathe? How is it that some children are born with difficulties breathing? Who else feels like just breathing is a hard enough struggle? When does breathing become hard? How can I breathe in a way that I share the very essence of who I am with everyone who sees me?

Breathing is so instinctive, so natural. Breathing is something that is taken for granted, pushed aside, stepped on, tossed out, ignored, forgotten. Breathing is something that we cannot live without, but when do we really think about it? When do we ask questions about it? When do we answer ourselves, stopping the world for just a moment, and say “Just take some time to breathe,” and really do it? How often do we sit in our closed rooms, apart from the rest of the world, and try to breathe but end up distracted by all of the garbage we can’t seem to get out of our heads?

Today I am making a choice, a choice that breathing is important. I am going to try to spend at least five minutes every morning just breathing. I am going to try to feel it every step of the way, as the air flows into my body and back out again. Breathing is this crazy, solid, non-material, spiritual, elusive sort of thing that is always there somewhere but I can never quite put my finger on where. I can feel it, in my body, when I am breathing the right way. I can tell when I am not breathing how I should. I take medication so I breathe in a healthy way, without wheezing, so I am not scarring my lung tissue anymore.

Like breathing, in my very human nature I take so many things for granted. Maybe if I remember to breathe, really breathe, I will remember to appreciate other things in my life how I should.

I’m Tweeting (Yikes!)

  • So, I started going by my middle name in college because I've always liked it better. Now I'm Renée, and can be tweeted at "teafaellana." 3 years ago
  • I keep reading fanfics to tide me over until #OUaT is back. I can't wait to see more character development of Regina! #EvilRegals 3 years ago
  • This has somehow been the best and worst Thanksgiving I've ever had, all at once. 3 years ago
