We don’t need to suffer a traumatic or life changing event to feel compassion toward someone. We can choose to show compassion right now, every day, no matter what our circumstances might be. I would like to think that if we could all see our futures, and even if some of us knew that nothing bad would ever happen to us and we would never need a shoulder to lean on (which is so incredibly far from true), we would still be there for others in their times of need. I would like to think that the reason we show compassion is not because we know we’ll probably need help later. I would also like to think that we have enough kindness buried inside us that we don’t have to have something crazy happen to us before we are able to reach out and help others.

I am going to practice showing compassion to others, for no reason other than I believe that I personally do not show enough. At least, for the right reasons.

I want to give even if I may never receive. It isn’t going to be easy, but I will never know what I am capable of if I never try.

Also, compassion doesn’t need to be showy or large in gesture. We can show compassion in simple ways to friends, co-workers, family, and strangers in your local area every day without having to spend a dime. Compassion is more than taking a small amount of time on occasion to give money to an organization, or to volunteer somewhere. Compassion starts with us, and while those things are both very good things, compassion needs to be welcome to exist in our lives more than that. Compassion needs to exist in our lives when someone is struggling carrying the groceries (even if this person is not by definition a “little old lady”), when somebody is walking in the rain and we are driving up to the crosswalk they are standing at (do we drive on through? do we stop and let them cross? do we offer them a ride?), when somebody is having a rough day (hugs are free!), or when we are having a hard day and just want to get through it (that is the most important time to pay special attention to where compassion is needed in our lives).

I’m Tweeting (Yikes!)

  • So, I started going by my middle name in college because I've always liked it better. Now I'm Renée, and can be tweeted at "teafaellana." 3 years ago
  • I keep reading fanfics to tide me over until #OUaT is back. I can't wait to see more character development of Regina! #EvilRegals 4 years ago
  • This has somehow been the best and worst Thanksgiving I've ever had, all at once. 4 years ago

Smile about what you are thankful for, and never forget you are a dreamer.

I am a girl on a mission, and the mission I am on is to be myself. I am an undiscovered treasure, and here I am giving you a key that will allow you a little further into the labyrinth of who I am.

Heather loves hats that are designed to look like cute animals, fairy wings, cheese pizza, swimming in ponds, roller blading, taking silly self-portraits, learning, spending time with people, and just about everything else too. Heather does not love ... well, there isn't a lot that she doesn't love. You can probably figure it out after a little while!
