Familiar Strangers

I was reading posts from blogs that I subscribe to, and while I was reading a post titled Blessings I followed a link to the Being Blog’s post about a Loving Kindness Meditation.

I agree with Candee, author of the Blessings post. I want to practice this incredible act daily for the rest of my life. I’d have to if I want to include all of the people I’ve grown to love, plus all of my familiar strangers.

Speaking of familiar strangers, it is that phrase that lead me to blogging about this. Two simple words, two words that are not close to the same meaning at all but work so perfectly together to describe so many people in my life. I go to church almost every week with about 10 “loved ones”, add in 5 others that are very inspirational to me but don’t really hold a relationship with me, and about 250 “familiar strangers”. There’s also about 25 “complete strangers” every Sunday. This is just at church.

Grocery stores, gas stations, libraries, schools, sidewalks, parks, restaurants, and bowling alleys are full of familiar strangers in a small town. People that you could rattle off their name, job, extra-curricular activities, ex-boyfriends, mothers, cousins, uncles, and what awards they got last year at the county fair. But they are people you don’t know their birthday, don’t know their favorite color, don’t know their middle name, don’t know their hobbies, don’t know their goals, don’t know their fears. You don’t know the color of their eyes. You don’t even look.

What if we blessed these people every day? What if we blessed each other? Certainly, we would be rich. And I don’t mean the kind of rich that would allow us to buy each other fancy clothes or gifts, but the kind of rich that we could give each other a smile. The kind of rich that pours out of us, like the warm fudge in the center of a meltdown cake. The kind of rich that makes people ill with pleasure, but that is constantly craved. The kind of rich where everyone, no matter how much or how little they had, would wake each day with a content smile on their face.

This, I believe, is how to be rich.

Burkie

Your heart for others is beautiful. That’s the best definition of “rich” I’ve ever heard.

Heather loves hats that are designed to look like cute animals, fairy wings, cheese pizza, swimming in ponds, roller blading, taking silly self-portraits, learning, spending time with people, and just about everything else too. Heather does not love ... well, there isn't a lot that she doesn't love. You can probably figure it out after a little while!
