Today Is Your Day

For the amount that I ask the question “Why?” or “What good is it?” I am still an amazingly optimistic person. I truly believe that if you want it, if you actively strive for it, you can get to it. If you believe it, it’s true. Somewhere in my core, I believe that we have so much influence over everything in our lives- without even realizing it.

It never ceases to make me furrow my brow when someone says, “I’m not good at art. I want to be, I’m just not.”

I usually smile and say, “No you don’t. You want to be good at art right now, but you don’t want it badly enough to practice. That’s okay. It’s okay to like something else better.”

They respond with, “All I ever draw is stick figures though, and those aren’t even good!”

I smile again, this time bigger, and say, “Have you ever seen me draw? My stick figures suck too. Usually all of my art starts as something that I think is terrible… but I spend the time it takes to make it better. You might spend ten minutes drawing a stick figure and give up. I spend ten minutes drawing a stick figure and keep going until several hours have passed and it’s not a stick figure anymore.”

They usually look apologetic at that point, but I tell them, “Don’t worry about it. You can appreciate art without creating it. I appreciate people who can run for miles, but I will never want it badly enough to do it myself. I appreciate a clean bedroom, but I do not want to clean mine enough to have one for myself. You don’t have to be good at it. We are all different.”

Today is your day to do what you love. People may never understand why you spend so much time on it, why you work to improve, but you realize it doesn’t matter to you. You are happy! Also, in being happy doing what you love to do you gain respect for others doing what they love to do.

I love blogging, but lately I have loved sketching and sleeping and working and spending time with friends and family more. One of these days I’ll hopefully want to scan some sketches badly enough and I’ll share them with you. For now, I am going to do what I love to do even more than that. I am going to dance in my room with my hairbrush for a mic, I am going to draw and paint, I am going to ride my bicycle in the sunshine through the quiet streets of my small town, I am going to love my job, I am going to spend time with friends and family, and I am going to sleep for longer than 5 hours a night. Today is my day too.

Happy Adventures,
Burkie

I’m Tweeting (Yikes!)

  • So, I started going by my middle name in college because I've always liked it better. Now I'm Renée, and can be tweeted at "teafaellana." 2 years ago
  • I keep reading fanfics to tide me over until #OUaT is back. I can't wait to see more character development of Regina! #EvilRegals 3 years ago
  • This has somehow been the best and worst Thanksgiving I've ever had, all at once. 3 years ago

Heather loves hats that are designed to look like cute animals, fairy wings, cheese pizza, swimming in ponds, roller blading, taking silly self-portraits, learning, spending time with people, and just about everything else too. Heather does not love ... well, there isn't a lot that she doesn't love. You can probably figure it out after a little while!
