“I don’t want to play with you!” [A Dose of Gratitude]

There is no denying that us “grown-ups” all laughed uproariously when my little second cousin said to my even littler second cousin, “I don’t want to play with you!” The boy had been chased around by his cousin for most of Thanksgiving dinner, and he was tired of her continuing to pester him. She wanted to play ball, tag, poke-me-I’ll-poke-you, and any number of games that 3-6 year old children may think of. He wanted to hang out with “The Guys.”

Of course we all think they’re just the best thing since sliced bread and we’re always laughing about the things that they say and do. They’re undeniably cute!

However, now that I am home I realized that the older cousin may have been taking the little cousin for granted. He may not have appreciated that she wanted to spend time with him, and probably wasn’t acting very thankful. A lot of us probably do the same things. “I don’t want to do the dishes for you,” or “I don’t want to run to the store for you,” or “I don’t want to watch that movie with you,” are all things that I say to my parents more than I should. I take them for granted more than I should. I don’t always show my appreciation or act thankful.

Maybe this lesson that my little cousins reminded me of will sink in a bit more this year.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Heather

paint your face, please.

Wow. Just wow. :O

where is acacia?

The last week has been one of absolute exhaustion and astounding levels of stress focused on the completion of an assignment titled “Collective Portrait”, a series of portraits of everyone in our class. At last, it is nearly finished. Stuck in Providence as we are, I asked everyone to paint themselves with a landscape they feel a connection to.  Nowhere like art school to get this accomplished with enthusiasm!  A huge thanks to my amazing classmates, many of whom really outdid themselves in terms of detail.

Rachel – Walden Pond

Jenna – “So mine is about flowers… and snow… and the universe”

Charlotte – Sunset over the ocean

Tom – Lake in rural New York

Alex – African savannah

Bree – City skyline

Samantha – Ocean

Will – Icelandic tundra (with sheep)

Elliot – Seaside

Ben – Rolling hills with fog

Camille – Ocean

Graham – Forest

Abby – Ocean

Back in the days of the Kodak EasyShare C643 or something…

To this day this is still one of my all-time favorite photographs. I took it in one of my best friend’s many homes, with my first camera EVER (a Kodak EasyShare point & shoot), and hesitated to edit it at ALL until today when I made this black& white version of it. Still, all I did was change it to black & white. No cropping, morphing, warping, content-aware-filling, or anything of that nature. I guess even I forget that you don’t need a fancy camera to take a memorable photograph.

Now, if only I could find that pirate-hunting video, “…pirates love cornfields!”

Hannah (A Watercolor Portrait)

I am so proud of myself! Tonight I just felt like painting a portrait, and I had this photograph of my cousin that I took earlier this year accessible so I decided to paint her. I see now that I still have some more work to do, some areas of the nose aren’t shaded quite right– still though, it looks like her! People who know her, but didn’t see the photo I was referencing even immediately thought it was her. I love painting people, and I don’t think that will ever go away. Original portrait below:

The Quiet Life

I have decided that I am uncontrollably elated every time I visit Miz Booshay’s blog: http://booshay.blogspot.com/

It’s warm, cozy, natural, full of AMAZING photographs and some adorable snapshots. Quirky, real, informative, encouraging, and oh-so-much-more. Starr, you especially may want to have a look. Yes, you. I don’t know why, but something tells me you might like what you find there. Both of you women love taking pictures of your beautiful daughters for the sake of capturing memories, whether it is a gorgeously captured portrait or a hasty snapshot in time filled with love and silliness. Both of you are profound. There are many differences, I am sure, but have a look.

Is it bizarre that I just took a chunk of my blog post to address a blog-friend directly instead of just commenting to her? Oh well… I’m tired. I hope you aren’t upset, Starr! :O

Heather

Heather does not love ... well, there isn't a lot that she doesn't love. You can probably figure it out after a little while!
